On September 6, 2017, the US House of Representatives passed legislation to create a new legal framework for autonomous vehicles and to clarify federal and state regulatory roles over evolving autonomous driving technology. In the meantime, the Senate Commerce Committee continues its work on proposed legislation. In addition, the US Department of Transportation released revisions to its earlier autonomous vehicle guidance on September 12.
We have been at the forefront of legal issues surrounding AV development with activities in our offices around the globe, including in Washington DC, Sydney, London and Brussels, as well as our Autonomous Driving Series hosted in our San Francisco office. With the focus now on developments in Washington DC, our Autonomous Driving Series will continue the dialogue in the heart of the federal government.
The first of the discussion series will focus on privacy and cybersecurity issues that confront OEMs, technology companies and the federal government. How will the different players deal with balancing privacy and security with innovation, safety and regulatory differences?
