As shown by white hat hackers in a number of high-profile cases, the possibility of cyber breaches for autonomous vehicles is real. Automotive and technology companies as well as regulators are taking these threats seriously, attempting to develop a framework for addressing vulnerabilities as technological development threatens to outpace security mechanisms.

In addition, in this age of big data there are serious concerns about consumer privacy protection with many questioning how companies will use and retain personal data collected from self-driving cars. In the last few months, various consumer groups and some legislators have voiced concerns about the lack of legislation addressing privacy and security issues in connected vehicles. Recently released government guidelines provide some further guidance, but it remains uncertain whether these will truly protect autonomous vehicles from being hacked in the future.

At this session, our panel of thought leaders will discuss how best to address:

  • Legal Implications: What do autonomous vehicle manufacturers and technology companies need to know about the current state of legislation in the US and abroad regarding cybersecurity and data protection?
  • Compliance: What steps does the industry need to take today to ensure compliance? Will these steps still be relevant when these cars begin to be sold to the general public?
  • Consumer Privacy: What steps might manufacturers take to address concerns over data use?
  • Security Infrastructure: What further security infrastructure is needed to safeguard passengers and assure the public (and potential consumers) of the safety and security of autonomous vehicles?

Panelists for this session will include:
  • Gretchen Ramos (CIPP/US, CIPP/E), Data Privacy & Cybersecurity partner at Squire Patton Boggs (moderator)
  • Chris Carson, CEO and founder of Caruma Technologies
  • Nate McFeters, US Transport Security Practice Director at NCC Group
  • May Wang, CTO and co-founder of Zingbox
