Jane Briggs’ particular expertise covers advising trustees and employers on all aspects of pensions and other relevant legislation as it affects their responsibilities and obligations and the operation of their pension plans.

Through the practice’s trustee companies, The Trustee Corporation Limited and Trinity Park Trustees Limited, she also undertakes the role of trustee of a number of pension schemes, mostly where the schemes are winding up due to the insolvency of the sponsoring employer.

Jane is the Secretary of the North East Region Group of the Pensions Management Institute and participates in Business in the Community projects undertaken by Squire Patton Boggs.

  • Acting in her trustee capacity and advising trustee clients, where a pension plan is eligible for the Pension Protection Fund (PPF), managing a pension plan's progress through a PPF assessment period and transfer into the PPF; and, where a pension plan is eligible for the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), completing of the FAS tasks and transfer into the FAS, and other related issues.
  • Advising trustees on and negotiating the terms of adviser agreements.
  • Advising trustees on and negotiating the terms of investment management agreements.
  • Drafting definitive trust deed and rules, deeds of amendment and other plan documents.
  • Advising the trustee of a centralised scheme for non-associated employers on various issues including preservation of benefits, cessation of accrual and winding up, obligation of employers to pay contributions and in relation to an application to court to obtain clarification of members' benefit entitlements.
  • Advising trustees on de-risking proposals including closure of plans to future defined benefits accrual and enhanced transfer and pension increase swap exercises.
  • Advising trustees on a wide range of benefit queries including overseas transfers and pension sharing and earmarking orders.
  • Advising trustees on whether previous steps to equalise retirement ages were effective.
  • Advising trustees in connection with disputes with plan members.
