    Lara Bazelon, a law professor, author and contributing writer for The Atlantic, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post and POLITICO, among other media outlets.

    Shira A. Scheindlin, a retired US District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York, a frequently published author and lecturer, who during a 22-year tenure, presided over numerous important criminal and civil cases.

    Special Guest Biographies

    Lara Bazelon is an associate professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she directs the criminal defense and racial justice clinics. Her scholarship addresses issues at the intersection of ethics and criminal justice advocacy After clerking for the Honorable Harry Pregerson on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Lara served as a deputy federal public defender for seven years in Los Angeles and as the former director of the Loyola Law School Project for the Innocent. A contributing writer for Slate and Politico Magazine, Lara’s opinion pieces and essays have also been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Atlantic. Her first book, Rectify: The Power of Restorative Justice After Wrongful Conviction, was published in October of 2018.

    Shira A. Scheindlin served 22 years as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York. She is now of counsel at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and  a mediator and arbitrator with AAA, FedArb, CPR and ICDR.  She previously worked as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, General Counsel for the New York City Department of Investigation, partner at Herzfeld & Rubin, Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York, and Special Master in the Agent Orange mass tort litigation. 

    Judge Scheindlin is known for presiding over complex and highly-publicized cases involving civil rights and public policy. She has been a member of the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on the American Judicial System where she Chairs the Federal Courts Subcomittee, the American Law Institute, a former Chair of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the NYSBA She is an adjunct professor of law at NYU law school  Judge Scheindlin is the author of the first e-discovery casebook (together with Professor Dan Capra and the Sedona Conference) and many articles. Her opinions in Zubulake v. UBS Warburg LLC, and Pension Committee v. Banc of America Securities, has come to be recognized as case law landmarks.
