An Ounce of Prevention: The Importance of Ethical Best Practices for the Medical Transcription Industry

    April 2010

In this interview in the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity's (AHDI) Health Data Matrix journal, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. partner Scott A. Edelstein discusses why adopting and implementing a set of ethical best practices is important for the future success of the medical transcription industry, as well as that of individual companies. The discussion touches on a number of important issues for businesses in the health care space including recent changes in law and government and how the government’s crackdown on Medicare fraud stands to affect medical transcription service organizations.

Mr. Edelstein recently worked with the AHDI to create materials for the organization’s Manual of Ethical Best Practices for the Healthcare Documentation Sector, designed to help medical transcription businesses and professionals adopt policies and procedures for complying with HIPAA privacy and security laws and operating in a manner consistent with ethical best practices.
