In June, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded to KPMG a $9.2 million contract to create an audit protocol and then audit covered entities' and business associates' compliance with the privacy and security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The contract calls for as many as 150 audits of entities varying in size and scope before December 31, 2012.
