TECHCOMM CLIENT ALERT: FCC Narrowbanding Requirements for Public Safety to Take Effect in Less than One Year; FCC Encourages Early Transition and Waiver Requests

The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) requirement that public safety and business radios operating in the 150-174 and 421-512 MHz frequencies upgrade to narrowband (12.5 kHz or narrower) channeling will become effective on January 1, 2013. By this time next year, unless granted a waiver, all business radio licensees must have modified their licenses and installed or modified equipment to meet the narrowbanding requirements. Operation of wideband operations on a secondary basis is prohibited. Equipment certified by the FCC after 1997 is required to operate in 12.5 kHz narrowband mode, so it is not likely that significant new equipment will be necessary unless your system was manufactured before that time.
