On Wednesday June 6, 2012, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski hosted a Mobile Health (mHealth) Summit, convening senior executives and leaders from the health care technology industry, government and academia to address the “opportunities and challenges” of mobile and wireless health products.  Calling on participants to provide concrete suggestions and solutions that are not just “new” but effective in improving care, lowering costs and saving lives, Chairman Genachowski tagged Robert Jarrin at Qualcomm, Doug Trauner from TheCarrot and Dr. Julian Goldman of the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology(CIMIT) to help develop next steps.  Answering the immediate question of why the FCC is focusing on health-related matters, the Chairman remarked, “because the FCC is the nation’s expert agency on communications technology – and innovation at the intersection of communications technology and health care is essential to the quality of care for all Americans.”
