Regulating Sports Betting in India

    July 2012
This paper, co-authored by Carl Rohsler, head of the Squire Sanders Gambling Law & Regulation Industry Group, in conjunction with a conference held by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), looks at the largely unregulated sports betting industry in India and the issues faced in putting a system of regulation in place. It proposes a model for regulation and highlights some of the advantages, also dealing with the disadvantages of the failure to regulate. The discussion includes sports betting in the constitutional context as well as the tax issues involved.
