Following a massive overhaul of the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) late last year, the Commonwealth Government has again introduced a Bill to the Australian Parliament to further reform Australian privacy and data protection laws. If passed it will have a significant impact on reporting and the penalties involved. Clients are advised to be prepared and update privacy policies accordingly. In light of the amendments passed last year it is worth considering a privacy “health check.” Those amendments come into effect on 12 March 2014 and, if the Bill passes, the reforms will commence on the same date.
