Data Privacy & the Chemicals Sector

    February 2014

The February 2014 edition of Speciality Chemicals includes an article authored by Squire Sanders partner Cristiana Spontoni and associate Katherine Llewellyn, “Data Privacy & the Chemicals Sector.” The article provides a status update on the proposals for a new “Data Privacy Regulation” being discussed in the European Union (EU).

Whilst the future of the data privacy reforms remains uncertain, with the increasing globalisation of the chemicals industry, the rise of cloud computing and the desire of the EU to extend the applicability of its legislation beyond its borders, it is certain that the EU data privacy regime will become increasingly important for global businesses, and the chemicals industry will be no exception. This will be exacerbated by the heightened perceived threat to privacy as the fallout from the Edward Snowden disclosures continues, as does the general trend in the EU towards increased regulation.
