Changes to the Immigration Rules From 6 April 2014

Changes and updates to Tier 1 and 2 of the Points Based System came into force yesterday (6 April 2014). The key change will be welcomed by Tier 2 sponsors in that they can now assign a Certificate of Sponsorship for a full 5 years (for an additional fee). However, Tier 1 (General) Highly Skilled migrants have drawn the short straw. As of 6th April 2015, the Tier 1 (General) category will close for extension applications (the category has been closed to initial applicants since 2011), and for settlement applications on 6th April 2018. This means that applicants who entered the route before its closure should have time to apply for settlement if they meet the requirements and cannot continue to extend under Tier 1 (General) indefinitely. Across the board maintenance and salary packages have been increased in line with inflation.
