The June 26, 2015, edition of TradeWinds magazine, the shipping industry’s leading news service, featured three articles in a two-page spread that chronicled the career of Squire Patton Boggs partner Brian Starer, co-head of the firm’s Transportation, Shipping & Logistics Practice. The profile spanned his early years and the past 40 years as a casualty lawyer in the maritime industry, notably working on 137 major ship losses over that period. Before attending law school, he served as a deck officer on Victory Ships, and accelerated through the US Merchant Marine Academy in the midst of the Vietnam war. By the time he was on his way to Albany Law School, he had seagoing experience and an unlimited US master’s license as well as an insider’s appreciation of shipping as a mariner-turned-lawyer.
The articles provide Brian’s insights on the changes he has seen in the industry and the challenges that it still faces, particularly with regard to training and properly manning ships, but also to the human factors that come into play, like crew fatigue. Also highlighted are Brian’s more noteworthy cases and his work trying to bring classification societies in the industry into the world of liability as part of his efforts to make “the world a better place for seamen and protecting the environment.”
