Sponsorship applications for a Sponsored Parent (temporary) visa (Visa) open from 17 April 2019.
Once the sponsorship application to sponsor a parent has been approved, the sponsored parent will be able to apply for the Visa from 1 July 2019.
The Visa provides parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia, allowing stays in Australia for a period of up to five years at a time. The parent may apply for a second Visa for a further five years, however, will need to be outside Australia for at least 90 days before being eligible.
Sponsors must meet the criteria, which includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- They must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor, and a step-parent can only apply if they are still in a married/de facto relationship with a biological parent of the sponsor
- They must be at least 18 years of age
- They must be an Australian citizen/permanent resident or eligible
- New Zealand citizen who has been usually resident in Australia for four years
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said, “This new visa will ensure family reunions are possible for thousands of migrant families and will deliver great social benefits to families and communities across Australia.” The government further announced that there might be up to 15,000 Visas granted each program year (from 1 July to 30 June).
While the Visa allows for a significantly longer period than a general visitor visa, it is important to note that it is still a temporary visa and does not allows for permanent residence in Australia, unlike a permanent Parent visa.
