The Department of Justice (DOJ) has aggressively pursued healthcare fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic, recently announcing its largest enforcement action ever. Adapting its response to the new challenges and business opportunities presented by the Pandemic, telehealth providers represented an outsized majority of DOJ’s enforcement actions in terms of pure dollar value. That is not to say DOJ neglected traditional healthcare fraud schemes, particularly those related to the prescription of opioids, however. In sum, DOJ appears to be humming along, undeterred by the Pandemic, in its fight against healthcare fraud.
