Squire Sanders New Partner Class Draws From Offices Worldwide

    Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. drew from its offices in Asia, Europe and the United States in naming 11 new partners in the corporate, intellectual property, labor and employment, litigation, public finance and real estate practices.

    The new partners are:

    • Cipriano S. Beredo III, a corporate lawyer in the Cleveland office, regularly advises public companies, privately held businesses and financial institutions on mergers and acquisitions, securities and corporate finance transactions and a wide range of corporate governance and general business matters. He has particular experience representing corporations and private equity firms in complex multijurisdictional acquisition and divestiture transactions. Beredo has significant involvement in the firm’s sports and entertainment practice, advising clients on endorsement and performance contracts and license agreements. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Indiana University in 1999, where he was associate editor of the Federal Communications Law Journal, and his B.A. from Miami University in 1994.
    • Pierre H. Bergeron, a litigation lawyer in the Cincinnati office, has established himself as a premier appellate litigator as part of the firm’s federal appellate and Supreme Court practice. He recently participated in a landmark arbitration case that was decided by the US Supreme Court and will argue before the Court on another case this term. Bergeron also handles a variety of complex civil litigation matters including class action defense and arbitration enforcement. He has extensive pro bono experience. He has served as an adjunct professor of the Sixth Circuit appellate practice and frequently publishes and speaks on appellate practice issues. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1999 and his B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Centre College in 1996.
    • Patrick D. Cornelius, a corporate lawyer in the Columbus office, has broad experience in US and non-US transactional and business projects including mergers and acquisitions, private equity and joint venture transactions, corporate governance and board counseling matters, intellectual property commercial transactions and public-private partnerships. Cornelius handles matters for clients in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, technology and health care. He received his J.D. in 1997 from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Virginia Tax Review. He received his B.A., with high honors, from the University of Notre Dame in 1993.
    • Radek Janecek, a corporate lawyer in the Prague office, is an experienced mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance lawyer who has also served as the lead on several complex real estate development projects. Janecek, who has been with Squire Sanders since he graduated from law school, has practiced in the United States and is a member of the New York State Bar. He received his LL.M. in 1997 from The George Washington University and his magistrate’s degree from Univerzita Karlova in 1996.
    • Jill S. Kirila, a labor and employment lawyer in the Columbus and Cincinnati offices, is an experienced counselor and litigator with particular expertise in wage and hour class actions, trade secrets and covenants not to compete. She also works on complex business litigation matters and on employment issues stemming from restructurings and other transactions. Kirila received her J.D. in 1997 from Georgetown University and her B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from The Ohio State University in 1994.
    • Mark Lupkowski, an intellectual property lawyer in the San Francisco and Houston offices, focuses his practice on patent prosecution in connection with chemical and life sciences technologies. A former senior research engineer, Lupkowski holds a doctorate in chemical engineering and combines approximately 10 years of academic and industrial experience with his legal expertise to represent clients in the chemical, medical device and software technology industries. He also oversees the intellectual property needs of the firm’s Japan-based clients. Lupkowski received his J.D. in 1999 from the University of Texas in Austin; his M.B.A. in 1995 from Our Lady of the Lake University; his Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of Massachusetts and his B.S. in 1984 from Cornell University.
    • Christopher J. Miner, a corporate lawyer in the Phoenix office, represents investment banks and corporations in capital market and cross-border transactions including debt and equity offerings, merger and acquisitions transactions and debt restructurings. He has extensive experience with all aspects of the 1933 Securities Act registration process and 1934 Securities Exchange Act compliance requirements. In addition, he counsels clients in corporate governance and general corporate matters including bank credit and financing, employment agreements and asset purchase and sale transactions. He received his J.D., cum laude, in 1999 from Brigham Young University, where he was a senior editor of the BYU Law Review, and his B.A. in 1996, also from Brigham Young University.
    • Saburo Nakao, a corporate lawyer in the Tokyo office, advises clients on various international transactions such as cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and other strategic alliances and investments, licensing and technology transfers. Nakao applies extensive knowledge of both US and Japan law to serve the needs of clients in Japan and others with business interests there. He received his LL.M. in 1996 from New York University and his M.A. in 1995 from Doshisha University.
    • Terence L. Thomas, a real estate lawyer in the Cleveland office, provides advice and counsel to clients regarding a wide range of corporate and real estate transactions. He has significant experience dealing with real estate for retail, office, multifamily, industrial (including brownfields) and hospitality uses, and provides real estate support to Squire Sanders’ corporate and public sector clients. He is active in the Real Estate Section of the Cleveland Bar Association, serving in various leadership capacities as co-chair, panel moderator and speaker at seminars sponsored by the association and the firm. He received his J.D. in 1994 from The Ohio State University and his B.S. from Cornell University.
    • Harriet M. Welch, a public finance lawyer in the Los Angeles office, focuses her practice on public finance, project finance, securities and municipal bond issues. With more than 20 years of practice in California and nearly 30 years as a municipal bond attorney, she has been instrumental in developing the firm’s public finance practice in California. She represents California bond issuers, investment bankers, letter of credit banks and borrowers on tax exempt financings, and has led more than 70 significant California public finance engagements including bond counsel engagements and underwriters’ counsel representation for national and regional underwriters. She is a past president of the California Association of Bond Lawyers and a current member of the Executive Committee of the Board of the Los Angeles Economic Development Authority. Her clients include the County of Los Angeles, many of the top higher education institutions in California and the State Public Works Board of the State of California. She received her J.D. in 1978 from The Catholic University of America, where she was a member of the Catholic University Law Review, and her B.A. in 1975 from Loyola University in New Orleans.
    • Andrew J. Wilkinson, a corporate lawyer in the London office, leads the Squire Sanders commercial and technology law practice in the United Kingdom. He advises UK and international businesses in a range of different sectors in relation to general commercial matters including procurement, agency and distribution agreements, joint ventures and dispute resolution. Wilkinson also advises both suppliers and users of hardware, software, systems integration services, managed services and technology consultancy services in relation to technology research and development, intellectual property rights protection and exploitation of technology and intellectual property rights including through strategic alliances, joint ventures and reseller and partnering arrangements. He completed his Law Society Finals in 1991 at the College of Law, Guildford and received his LL.B., with honors, in 1990 from University College of Wales.
