Forty-one lawyers with global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. received top ranking in the 2008 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. The directory, published by Chambers and Partners, cites the firm’s prominence in nine practices areas in offices throughout the United States.
The annual directory gave top regional ranking to the firm’s banking and finance, bankruptcy/restructuring, construction, corporate/mergers and acquisitions (M&A), employee benefits and executive compensation, labor and employment, environmental, health and safety (natural resources), general commercial litigation, and real estate practices.
Squire Sanders’ corporate practice was described as “an 800 lb. gorilla in municipal bonds with a strong corporate governance team and broad capability in M&A matters,” according to Chambers USA. The directory gave top rankings to lawyers Joseph M. Crabb, Christopher D. Johnson, Mary Ann Jorgenson, Gordon S. Kaiser Jr., Thomas R. McGuigan, Frank M. Placenti and Joseph P. Richardson. The firm’s litigation practice was described as having “a reach extending around the globe,” and for being home to “a large number of extremely proficient trial lawyers.” Lawyers noted include Alvin B. Davis, John R. Gall, Thomas S. Kilbane, Patricia E. Lowry, Lewis F. Murphy, Mark Ruehlmann and Robin Weaver.
The firm’s banking and finance practice was “hailed a real powerhouse by interviewees.” Lawyers Albert A. del Castillo, Guy F. Guinn, Osborne Mills Jr., JoEllen Minchak and Luis Reiter received top ranking in this category. The bankruptcy practice is “versatile and broadly accomplished,” according to Chambers USA, which noted Stephen D. Lerner, Jeffrey A. Marks, G. Christopher Meyer and Tim J. Robinson. Construction lawyer Steven A. Friedman is noted in the directory, and Carl A. Draucker and Gregory J. Viviani were noted in the employee benefits practice.
Squire Sanders’ environmental law practice has a national reputation, and Chambers USA notes, “Ohio is widely acknowledged to be a hotbed of superb environmental lawyers, and a large portion of this talent resides at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey.” It cites work by Geoffrey K. Barnes, Van Carson, Wendlene M. Lavey, Douglas A. McWilliams, Craig A. Sturtz, Christopher D. Thomas and Karen A. Winters. The labor and employment practice is “responsive, meticulous and very thorough,” said Chambers USA. Lawyers receiving high marks are David J. Millstone, William A. Nolan and Timothy J. Sheeran. The firm’s real estate practice “has a worldwide client base that includes investors, financial institutions and public entities,” according to Chambers USA. The directory notes Stephen J. Mitchell, Samuel S. Pearlman, Michael D. Saad and Bryan J. Venesy.
