London - Global Arbitration Review, a leading publication focused on international dispute resolution (IDR) issues and news, has named Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. among the top 30 firms in its 2009 GAR 100 list of leading IDR practices. The ranking, based on objective, quantitative data, is intended as a guide for clients.
Squire Sanders was singled out for representing clients in multibillion dollar cases against other leading arbitration counsel. “[W]e know that at least one Squire, Sanders & Dempsey arbitration client has cause to be pleased.” Spain’s Gas Natural “received compensation and a favourable pricing formula that may be worth as much as US$1 billion, according to commentators.”
George M. von Mehren, who leads the firm’s IDR and non-US litigation practice, said the high GAR ranking can be credited to Squire Sanders’ global reach and one-firm philosophy. The firm can field IDR expertise in Asia, Europe, Latin America – recently bolstered by a new legal network – and the United States.
According to the guide, von Mehren stated that “Clients can see we will be able to assemble a team that has the deep knowledge of the laws, languages and the relevant political and business cultures they need for their dispute.
“We’re extremely pleased and honored to be considered among the top 30 IDR practices in the world. This distinction is particularly gratifying given that our IDR practice was launched just six years ago,” von Mehren said.
In addition to von Mehren, the guide noted Iván Szász in the firm’s Budapest office who is a member of the ICC’s International Court of Arbitration and the additions of several IDR lawyers throughout the firm: Rod J. Cowper in London; New York-based lawyers Richard L. Mattiaccio, Steven Skulnik and Victor Genecin; and Miami-based lawyer Pedro J. Martinez‑Fraga, who coordinates the firm’s IDR practice for Florida and Latin America.
Squire Sanders’ IDR practice has received other distinctions including recognition by the Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration, the 2008 GAR 100 and the biennial Arbitration Scorecard published by The American Lawyer, which has listed Squire Sanders among law firms handling the world’s largest and most significant IDR matters.
