The 2009 edition of LatinLawyer 250, the leading legal guide to Latin America-based law firms, has recommended the Dominican Republic and Venezuela offices of global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. The firm was noted for its recent expansion in Latin America through the expanded Squire Sanders Legal Counsel Worldwide Network.
Lawyers in the Santo Domingo office are among those whose work has bolstered the reputation of the country’s legal profession, according to LatinLawyer 250. As the only global firm in the Dominican Republic, Squire Sanders was praised for strong global connections that help it “punch above its weight in the local marketplace.”
The guide notes partners Alejandro Peña-Prieto, the office managing partner, and Pedro O. Gamundi. Energy businesses have relied on Peña-Prieto’s counsel and industry savvy, the guide states, while Gamundi is sought after by both airlines and mining companies. National partner Awilda Alcántara Bourdier extends the firm’s capabilities in the country with her focus on banking, restructuring, and merger and acquisition transactions, according to LatinLawer 250.
Caracas Office Managing Partner Hernando Diaz-Candia is noted for his arbitration work and extensive experience advising on nationalization projects in Venezuela: “Diaz-Candia is scholarly, and thus his analysis of the problems includes a philosophical aspect.” LatinLawyer 250 also noted work done by Bernardo Weininger, described by clients as “an excellent professional that dedicates quality time to our company,” and Ramon Azpurua, who clients said represents the “essence of what a business lawyer should be” for his knowledge of Venezuelan law and contract and commercial issues. LatinLawyer 250 also states Juan Carlos Varela provides “straightforward, practical legal advice” on labor issues, while Juan José Delgado and María Cecilia Rachadell represent a “tax and corporate dream team.” Clients also appreciate the office’s “conservative and conscientious” approach to fees.
The firm’s recently expanded Legal Counsel Worldwide Network “shows a clear commitment to the region as part of the firm’s global ambitions.” The network includes six independent law firms throughout Latin America that work closely with the firm offices in Caracas, Rio de Janeiro, Santo Domingo and São Paulo.
Squire Sanders’ offices in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are consistently ranked in other key legal directories such as Chambers Global and Chambers Latin America, both published by Chambers and Partners.
