Patton Boggs recently represented Mr. and Mrs. Gary Jordan, whose daughter was killed by her husband in August 2007, leaving behind two children, Nina and D.J. Because their father was incarcerated for the death of Nicole, a permanent placement was required for the children. Without hesitation, the Jordans decided that they would pursue permanent guardianship. Associate David Silver and supervising partner Andrew Friedman worked on behalf of the Jordans to secure permanent guardianship of Nina and D.J., which became reality the last week of April when the court granted their request.
Despite being fully capable of raising Nina and D.J., the Jordans had not fully realized the emotional undertaking that would go along with assuming responsibility of their daughter’s children. They did not want to give Nina and D.J. the impression that they would be taking their daughter’s place, even though they would be given permanent guardianship. While sadly she is no longer with them, the Jordans want Nina and D.J. to continue to acknowledge Nicole as their mother and will strive to keep her memory alive as they grow older.
