Barry S. Goldsmith, a former engineer with more than 15 years of intellectual property (IP) law experience, has joined global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. as a partner. Goldsmith joins Squire Sanders from Womble Carlyle and is resident in the firm’s Tysons Corner office.
“Intellectual property counsel and support is essential for our clients, whether that support is providing IP due diligence, evaluating and procuring patents, or patent litigation,” said John E. Thomas, Tysons Corner managing partner. “Barry’s extensive experience advising a wide range of major multinational businesses is a significant addition to the Tysons Corner IP practice and to the firm as a whole.”
“We are committed to expanding our IP practice in all patent-related areas, and Barry is a great example of the legal talent we seek,” said Nathan Lane III, who leads the firm’s IP practice.
Goldsmith was a computer design engineer with IBM before pursuing law. He received his B.S. in 1985 from Virginia Tech and his J.D. in 1994 from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He has a particular focus on patent preparation and counseling for computer hardware/software and telecommunication companies, and frequently presents and publishes on IP issues.
“I chose Squire Sanders because my clients will be better served by the firm’s depth and geographic reach,” Goldsmith said. “Many of my clients are based in California, where Squire Sanders has a strong IP presence. These same clients do business around the world, and Squire Sanders’ global platform means I can support them no matter where their businesses take them."
