Lawyers with global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. who advised clients on two high-profile US bankruptcies, and a veteran trial lawyer, have been named “Lawyer of the Year” in their respective communities by annual legal guide The Best Lawyers in America.
Each year, Best Lawyers uses extensive peer-review surveys to identify individual lawyers who have excelled in their areas of law, and only one lawyer in each area is selected. This year, Best Lawyers named bankruptcy and restructuring lawyers Stephen D. Lerner of Cincinnati and Thomas J. Salerno of Phoenix Lawyers of the Year. In addition, Thomas P. Kilbane was named Lawyer of the Year in the “Bet the Company Litigation” category in Cleveland. Kilbane, Lerner and Salerno have all been recognized by Best Lawyers for 10 or more years.
“These three lawyers have made significant contributions to their respective fields during their distinguished careers, so we are very pleased, but not surprised, that they were selected for this honor,” said Squire Sanders chair James J. Maiwurm.
Kilbane, who led the firm’s global litigation practice for 17 years, has more than 30 years of trial experience litigating highly technical, multiparty disputes with particular emphasis on antitrust, contract, construction and securities cases. He is a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, which is comprised of the top 500 trial lawyers in the United States; the American College of Trial Lawyers; and the American Bar Foundation. He also represented the Unsecured Creditors Committee in the Enron bankruptcy. His extensive restructuring practice involves advising debtors, committees of secured and unsecured creditors, equity interest holders and acquirers of troubled businesses in Chapter 11 reorganization cases and out-of-court restructurings throughout the United States. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and currently serves as regent for the 6th Circuit. In addition to his longtime recognition by Best Lawyers, he has top-tier ranking in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business Lawyers and is recognized as a Top 100 Super Lawyer in Ohio Super Lawyers. Governments in Europe and Latin America sought Salerno’s advice when revamping their respective insolvency laws. He is a member of the UNCITRAL working group for its Insolvency Reform Project, which was completed in early 2007. In 2009, Salerno led the Squire Sanders team representing the Phoenix Coyotes LLC in what has been characterized as the most important sports litigation of the year. He has extensive experience representing distressed companies, acquirers and creditors in financial restructurings and bankruptcy proceedings, pre- and post-bankruptcy workouts, and corporate recapitalizations.
