Anticipating client need for guidance in the recovering real estate market, global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. has added Ellen L. Shapiro as a partner in the firm’s growing New York office.

“In addition to being the United States’ largest local real estate market, New York City is central to American and global real estate activity,” said firm Chair James J. Maiwurm. “Ellen has practiced in the real estate field for the past 18 years, and her experience in the dynamic New York market and across the United States benefits clients with real estate needs, and, by extension given the nature of the real estate practice, clients who have financial services, bankruptcy and restructuring issues as well.”

Shapiro joined Squire Sanders from Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, where she led that firm’s New York real estate practice.

Squire Sanders also welcomed real estate finance lawyer Jonathan M. Makarowitz, also formerly of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC. He is of counsel and specializes, among other areas, in community development lending, asset based lending and real estate finance.

Michael D. Saad, who heads the Squire Sanders real estate practice, said expanding the firm’s global real estate capabilities at this time, particularly in New York City, was a practice goal driven by the interests of clients who are evaluating opportunities as the economy recovers from the current  recession.

“We expect commercial real estate restructurings to continue and, as the financial markets become more stable, the pace of real estate transactions and financings to pick up, resulting in additional client need for counsel on such matters,” Saad said. “Ellen has exceptionally broad experience. She’s served as counsel for real estate lenders and investors structuring financing for multimillion-dollar projects and advised on complex workouts. She has significant experience representing institutional investors and acquirers in a variety of transactions across the United States.”

Shapiro and Makarowitz are the most recent additions to Squire Sanders’ New York office, which has steadily expanded over the past 18 months. The firm has doubled the number of lawyers, leading to the office’s recent move to 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

“Ellen and Jonathan provide the New York office with much-needed real estate capabilities,” said Edward S. Sinick, New York office managing partner. “Ellen also brings substantial law firm leadership experience.” Shapiro in prior years had been New York office managing partner and served on the firmwide promotions and compensation committee of her prior firm.

Shapiro and Makarowitz said Squire Sanders’ global geographic presence and collegial culture create a strong platform from which to serve the recovering real estate market.

“Squire Sanders places a premium on understanding clients’ business goals, and on building tight-knit legal teams with the right mix of skills and experience best suited to help clients meet those goals,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro received her J.D. in 1991 from Fordham University, where she was managing editor of The Urban Law Journal, and her B.A. in 1985 from Dartmouth College. She has represented both lenders and borrowers in real estate transactions and institutional lenders in equity and secured debt portfolio transactions. She also has significant experience in the areas of equity, mezzanine and mortgage debt, single asset financings, workouts and acquisitions, and in transactions involving the hospitality and leisure industry.

Makarowitz received his J.D. in 1998 from Hofstra University School of Law and his B.A. in 1995 from State University of New York at Stony Brook. He focuses his practice on community development lending, asset based lending and real estate finance. Makarowitz closes complex multimillion-dollar asset-based lending transactions and corporate restructurings.
