For the second time in as many months, a US national justice organization is honoring George H. Kendall for his work on behalf of human rights. Kendall is director of the Public Service Initiative at global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P and of counsel in its New York office. In March, Kendall received the Equal Justice Champion Award from the Equal Justice Initiative.

The Constitution Project, which seeks consensus solutions to difficult legal and constitutional issues, will honor Kendall April 15 at its 2010 Constitutional Champion Award dinner. US attorney general Eric Holder will present the keynote address, and Kendall will be introduced by Stephen Bright, president of the Southern Center for Human Rights.

“My career centers on pro bono advocacy for indigent citizens and prisoners whose rights to counsel were ignored by our criminal justice system,” Kendall said. “I consider it a tremendous privilege to be selected by The Constitution Project, the organization that cares deeply about enhancing the rule of law and is responsible for a recent comprehensive report on indigent defense in the United States,” said Kendall, referring to the 2009 Constitution Project report, “Justice Denied: America’s Continuing Neglect of Our Constitutional Right to Counsel.”

Squire Sanders Chair James J. Maiwurm said the award demonstrates the impact Kendall has had on the US justice system.

“George has been a mentor to a generation of leading criminal defense lawyers, and we at Squire Sanders are very pleased that he is now mentoring our associates as part of the firm’s Public Service Initiative,” Maiwurm said.

Howard J. C. Nicols, who oversees the firm’s advocacy practices, added that Kendall’s experience also adds to the firm’s long standing pro bono efforts as well as the firm’s federal and appellate practices.
