Squire Sanders won more of the Largest Commercial Arbitration Awards from 2001 to 2013 than any other firm, according to The American Lawyer Arbitration Scorecard, a worldwide survey of the “busiest high-stakes arbitration counsel.”
In The American Lawyer’s compilation of the biggest contract awards, Squire Sanders was the only firm to have three wins ranked in the top 20. They were:
- Gas Natural SDG S.A. v. Nigeria LNG ltd, where the firm achieved a $750 million price reduction and defeated a $500 million counterclaim;
- Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad v. Gas Natural, where the firm acted for Gas Natural in defeating the claimant’s demand for a price increase of more than $1 billion, and won a reduction of more than $2 billion, as well as a $74 million refund;
- Edison v. RasGas, where the firm successfully represented Italian utility Edison S.p.A. in its arbitration against RasGas, which resulted in a €450 million award from the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris.
- The Edison v. RasGas arbitration win was also ranked among the top 10 Biggest Arbitration Awards of the past two years.
Squire Sanders’ global chair of the International Dispute Resolution practice, George von Mehren, commented: “I am delighted at our strong showing in The American Lawyer Arbitration Scorecard. This reflects the calibre of cases and the sophistication of the work performed by our very experienced International Dispute Resolution team.”
Earlier this year, Squire Sanders was recognized as one of the top 30 international arbitration firms in the world by leading industry journal Global Arbitration Review (GAR). The firm is noted in the GAR guide for its track record in energy and construction matters, and has attracted plaudits for its gas price review work for Edison and Gas Natural.
