In its third annual “Global 20” ranking, legal newswire Law360 has recognized Squire Sanders as among “the 20 law firms that had the largest global presence and were involved in the biggest, most complex and most diverse array of cross-border matters over the past year.” Squire Sanders ranked #9 on the select list.
The “Global 20” applies both qualitative and quantitative measures, such as the percentage of lawyers and number of offices located outside the firm’s home country, and the number of countries where a firm has offices. Its panel of editors also reviews a firm’s cross-border and foreign matters over the past year, looking at both the breadth of its legal services and the size and complexity of its work.
Chair and Global CEO, Jim Maiwurm, commented: “Squire Sanders’ position among the top 10 global law firms is a result of our partners’ long-term commitment to developing an exceptional global platform that mirrors the expansion of our clients into international markets. We have talented lawyers around the globe and we have made significant investments in our people and global vision – we are pleased to see these efforts recognized.”
Squire Sanders, which has 39 offices in 19 countries and approximately 1,300 lawyers worldwide, expanded its global platform in 2012 to include new offices in Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and Riyadh.
Included among the many recent high-profile matters on which the firm has advised are the €300 million international arbitration for Italian utility, Edison S.p.A., in its arbitration against Algerian oil and gas company Sonatrach, and the sale of technology start-up Summly to Yahoo!. In addition, two firm matters were recognized in the recent Asian Legal Business Japan Awards. The acquisition of equity interests in the AUS$34billion Ichthys LNG Project, on which the firm advised, was named “Energy and Resources Deal of the Year,” while the firm’s representation of ITOCHU Corporation on its US$1.68 billion acquisition of the Asia fresh fruit and global packaged foods businesses of Dole Food Company was distinguished in the “International Deal of the Year” category.
The recognition as a “Global 20” law firm follows on Squire Sanders’ ranking as the #1 firm overall in Legal Week’s most recent Client Satisfaction Report, which singled out the quality of its legal and commercial advice, excellent service delivery, effective cost/billing practices, and international reach. Maiwurm commented, “The combination of our global reach and commitment to client satisfaction, as recognized by independent observers, speaks volumes about a firm built to serve the needs of clients in the current environment.”
