In an October 8, 2013 WIRED magazine article, DC Partner Carol Van Cleef explained that if the FBI were to use a third party to liquidate bitcoins seized during the bust of a money-laundering operation, for example, it would have to ensure that the liquidator didn’t run afoul of state and federal money transmission guidelines. “It creates some interesting issues,” said Ms. Van Cleef regarding the question of how the government would liquidate the digital currency. “Right now, we have a dearth of exchangers who are in a position to actually handle these transactions.”
