Employees from the Birmingham office of global law firm Squire Sanders have raised a record-breaking £25,753 for their 2013 adopted charity, Max Appeal. Max Appeal is a Stourbridge-based national charity which supports families affected by Di George Syndrome, VCFS and 22q11.2 deletion.
22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome is the most common of the rare disorders, affecting possibly 1 in 1,800 of the population. Missing genes on the 22nd chromosome cause birth defects affecting the heart, palate, immune system and brain.
During the course of the last 12 months, the office has held a wide variety of fundraising activities. Major events included:
- A triple ascent of Mount Snowdon covering 22 miles in 14 hours, symbolic of Max Appeal’s focus on 22q deletion;
- The Great North Run and Great Birmingham Run;
- The completion of the British Military Fitness Major Series Mud Run and Obstacle Course in Warwickshire;
- The hosting of a black tie dinner at Opus in Birmingham, where more than 100 clients and members of staff attended.
These achievements were supported by a range of smaller events throughout the year which included a clothes ‘Shwopping” event, cake sales and jeans days.
Paul Wootton of Max Appeal commented: “Max Appeal is the largest parent-led support group for families affected by this condition. We provide a wide range of information and services, including online communities and a helpline, to almost 30,000 people affected by 22q11.2 deletion in order to help them live independent and prosperous lives.
“We have been overwhelmed by the level of support from the staff at Squire Sanders, and the commitment shown by those participating in fund-raising events and their supporters. The money raised has increased our annual income from donations by 35% and will enable us to continue to increase awareness of this condition and enhance the services we can provide.”
Nick Green, managing partner of the Birmingham office, said: “We chose the charity after meeting the treasurer of Max Appeal, Paul Wootton, and his wife Julie. They made a very compelling case for Max Appeal to be our office charity and many staff left their presentation inspired to help in some way during the year.
“To raise over £25,000 in 12 months is testament to a phenomenal team effort and I would like to thank all of our staff and also our clients who together donated so generously throughout the year.”
