The Two-party System as a Stabilizing Force – Don McGahn

A Campaigns & Elections feature co-authored by partner Don McGahn was cited by The Hill in an April 16, 2014 article regarding campaign donations. Mr. McGahn notes in the piece, published in the March/April 2014 issue of the magazine, that many state parties had received significant transfers from the national parties prior to the passage of McCain-Feingold but now no longer do. “The two-party system has been a stabilizing force in our democracy for over 200 years,” wrote Mr. McGahn. “Without that stabilizing force, however, there has been a significant rise in the number of single-issue candidates, nasty primaries pitting the middle against the hard partisan flank, and a general polarization.”
