Squire Patton Boggs has hired Wolfgang Maschek, a highly respected European Union (EU) regulatory and public policy specialist, to lead its European Public Policy Practice in Brussels. Working across the firm’s practice groups, the European Public Policy Practice engages with a broad range of institutions – at both EU and Member State levels – to impact decision-making on issues affecting our clients.
Mr Maschek was previously Senior Counsel and Vice-President for International Regulatory Affairs at Western Union, where he led the European regulatory and public affairs functions. Up until 2006, Mr Maschek worked for the Austrian Central Bank and was responsible for communication with the European institutions.
An active member of various EU trade associations, Mr Maschek previously served as the Vice-Chair of the European Payment Institution Federation and Chair of its Technical Committee. He was also a member of the EU Payment Services Market Expert Group and the World Bank’s Global Remittances Working Group, amongst others.
Squire Patton Boggs has one of the most established and respected Public Policy Practices worldwide. In addition to being the trusted counsel for countless international businesses on legal and public policy issues, we are proud to have served as trusted advisors to more than 100 sovereign governments and entities. The team includes former World Trade Organization officials, Member State ambassadors, national policymakers and business leaders in addition to leading politicians in the US and Europe. In December 2015, the firm engaged Georg Serentschy and Michael Bartholomew as Senior Advisors to the European practice with a particular emphasis on telecommunications, media and technology regulation. Mr Maschek now adds a further expertise to our European Public Policy team.
“I am delighted to be joining Squire Patton Boggs’ expanding European Public Policy Practice. Working across the firm’s 15 European offices, in addition to its global platform, I look forward to further growing the firm’s preeminent international public policy capabilities for the benefit of our clients,” Mr Maschek said.
Brussels Managing Partner Brian Hartnett said: “Wolfgang makes a fantastic addition to our European Public Policy Practice. We want to ensure that the legal advice we provide to our clients is supplemented by valuable public policy insights, ensuring that they are prepared for both legislative and regulatory change. We are building a team that will work across the key sectors and we are delighted to welcome Wolfgang on board.”
“As part of our global strategy to enlarge our international centres of excellence that integrate legal counsel with regulatory insight and strategic advocacy, Brussels will remain a key market for us and for our clients in future,” said Robert Kapla, Chair of the International Public Policy Practice. “Given the increasing prevalence of the EU in both regulatory matters that impact our clients’ operations around the globe, we are pleased to expand our team in Europe under Wolfgang’s leadership.”
