Squire Patton Boggs Columbus managing partner Alex Shumate has been recognized as one of the “2016 Most Influential Black Corporate Directors” by Savoy Magazine. The annual Power 300 list, included as part of Savoy Magazine’s Summer 2016 issue, recognizes African-American executives, influencers and achievers proactively impacting corporate America.
At Squire Patton Boggs, Mr. Shumate’s duties include providing strategic and operational guidance in pursuing new business opportunities regionally, nationally and internationally. He is also a leader of the legislative counseling and administrative law activities of the firm, where he counsels clients in business regulatory and legislative matters involving local, state and federal governments. Previously, Mr. Shumate served as chief counsel and deputy chief of staff to the governor of the State of Ohio and as assistant Ohio attorney general.
Mr. Shumate is the Chairman and Lead Independent Director for CyrusOne, Director of The J.M. Smucker Company and Chair of The Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees. He has also served as Director of Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, Nationwide Financial Services and The Limited, Inc. Mr. Shumate is a Fellow of the Ohio State Bar Association and a former member of the Columbus Bar Association’s Board of Governors. He is a life member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Mr. Shumate was recognized by Lawyers of Color for its Annual Power List, a comprehensive catalog of the nation’s most influential minority lawyers and non-minority diversity advocates. In 2014, Mr. Shumate was honored by Smart Business Columbus as a recipient of its inaugural Smart 50 Award, which recognized central Ohio’s top 50 executives chosen for their ability to effectively build and lead innovative and smart organizations.
