Squire Patton Boggs continues to expand its European Public Policy Practice with the engagement of Eoin Ryan as a senior advisor, while also bringing on board Christina Economides as a policy advisor in Brussels.
Mr. Ryan was previously Irish Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he sat as a Member of the Budget and Administrative Affairs Committee. Before joining EBRD, Mr. Ryan served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for five years, during which time he was the Coordinator of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Member of the Committee on Development, Member of Relations with India Committee and Member of Petitions Committee. A former Irish Minister of State for Enterprise Trade and Tourism with special responsibility for the National Drug Strategy and Local Development plan, he served as a Member of the Parliament of Ireland for over two decades.
Ms. Economides brings a wealth of experience to the practice, having previously worked in the European Parliament, as a Policy Advisor for the British Chamber of Commerce in Brussels and as a consultant with a focus on regulatory and policy developments in financial services and taxation, technology and data protection matters.
The pair will further add to the strength and depth of the European Public Policy Practice. Wolfgang Maschek, previously senior counsel and Vice-President for International Regulatory Affairs at Western Union, was hired as head of the European Public Policy Practice in Brussels in March 2016 and drives its expansion forward. In December 2015, the firm engaged Georg Serentschy, former CEO of the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunication and Chairman of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communication (BEREC), and Michael Bartholomew, previously Director General of the European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association (ETNO), as senior advisors.
Speaking of his engagement, Mr. Ryan said, “This is an exciting time for me to join Squire Patton Boggs as it expands its international footprint and further builds on its European Public Policy credentials. I look forward to supporting the team, particularly for clients with Irish and UK operations.”
“Our clients are increasingly looking for holistic solutions combining extensive legislative, legal, regulatory and public policy expertise,” said Wolfgang Maschek. “As we support our clients, not only at the EU level but also at the national level across all 28 EU Member States, Eoin’s expertise in Ireland, the UK and in EU institutions will be of great benefit, particularly in the context of Brexit. We are also pleased to have Christina as part of the growing team to help to support and bolster our expanding service offering across Europe.”
“At the heart of Europe, we are seeing continually increasing legislative, regulatory and public policy activity in Brussels,” added Brian Hartnett, Brussels office managing partner. “We are delighted to welcome Eoin and Christina, who will add to our top-notch expertise and ensure our clients have the insight necessary to meet their varying objectives.”
