US Department of Transportation Appoints Squire Patton Boggs’ Brian Starer to Advisory Board of the US Merchant Marine Academy

    United States Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao has appointed Squire Patton Boggs senior partner Brian D. Starer to serve as a Special Government Employee on the Advisory Board to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) for a two-year term, effective immediately.

    The USMMA Advisory Board advises executives of the Academy on innovation in the maritime industry, emerging trends in shipping and maritime operations, curricular and educational innovations, enhancement of safety at sea and pollution prevention, and all aspects of Midshipman welfare and whole-person developments. Their efforts are in tandem with the overarching DOT strategic goals safety, infrastructure, innovation and accountability.

    Co-leader of the firm’s Transportation, Shipping & Logistics Practice, Mr. Starer has more than 35 years’ experience as a maritime practitioner, primarily focusing on marine casualties. Mr. Starer has investigated and advised on all aspects of maritime and environmental casualties, including property damage, cargo loss, personal injury and death claims, and natural resources and other environmental damage. He has served as casualty counsel in more than 100 ship disasters worldwide. Mr. Starer was inducted into the International Maritime Hall of Fame at the United Nations.
