Squire Patton Boggs has announced the appointment of highly regarded barrister and anti-bribery and corruption (ABC) risk expert Jonathan Chibafa, who has joined the firm as a legal director from Exiger, a global specialist in regulatory compliance.

With more than a decade of experience in providing risk mitigation advice, Mr. Chibafa previously held senior in-house counsel roles at Tesco and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he advised on ABC-related issues, such as policy implementation, risk management and investigations. He was a member of the GSK Due Diligence Working Group, which advised on the company’s US$20 billion joint venture with Novartis.

Mr. Chibafa also practiced as a barrister at Red Lion Chambers, specialising in general crime and fraud. During his time there, he undertook secondments at the Serious Fraud Office and the Financial Conduct Authority.

Mr. Chibafa has worked with commercial leadership teams and compliance professionals in more than 40 countries. He has designed risk control frameworks, conducted in-market compliance assessments and advised on risk mitigation in a broad range of jurisdictions, including the United Arab Emirates, China, Cambodia, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Nigeria, South Africa, Vietnam, Poland, Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

Rob Elvin, who leads Squire Patton Boggs’ specialist anti-bribery and corruption team in the UK, commented: “Having implemented ABC programmes for companies as both an in-house compliance expert and as a consultant, Jonathan’s wealth of knowledge and expertise will be invaluable to clients looking for practical risk mitigation advice and training.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Chibafa said: “I am excited to be joining a truly global law firm which is in a great position to service the increasingly complex regulatory framework facing clients. The Airbus Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the Serious Fraud Office is a timely reminder of the challenges companies face from bribery and corruption risk. Squire Patton Boggs is well placed to help companies navigate these difficult challenges.”
