Suman Chakraborty serves as counsel to some of the most prominent insurance and reinsurance companies in the country, advising them on a range of litigation matters in state and federal courts across the country, and in domestic and international arbitrations. His work on behalf of these companies has been recognized by leading publications such as Chambers USA (Up and Coming, 2017 and 2018), The Legal 500 (2016 and 2018), Benchmark Litigation (Future Star, 2019) and The Expert Guides (Rising Star in both Litigation and Insurance, 2015–2018).

    Suman’s practice spans all lines of insurance and forms of reinsurance, and is centered on identifying and meeting the business objectives of his clients. In the property and casualty field, Suman is lead national counsel for a third-party claims administrator and affiliated reinsurer in the defense of tort and contract actions arising out of the handling of long-tail asbestos and environmental claims. In the life field, Suman is lead trial counsel for one of the largest national life insurance companies in its disputes with reinsurers.

    His practice includes advising clients on a wide range of insurance and reinsurance matters, including in the areas of insolvency, regulatory compliance, contract wording and disputes with managing agents.

    Suman currently serves as Co-chair of the Board of Directors of the National LGBTQ Task Force and a member of the Board of Directors of FFR/Princeton BTGALA.

    • Served as first chair trial counsel to leading life insurance company in reinsurance arbitration related to YRT reinsurance agreements.
    • Secured summary judgment for retrocessionnaire in dispute related to the allocation of claims across underlying policy years.
    • Secured dismissal of RICO and other tort claims against a reinsurer and third party claims administrator by policyholder alleging interference in administration of policy. (S.D. Ohio)
    • Secured dismissal with prejudice of contract and tort claims against a third party claims administrator. (N.D. Indiana)
    • Acted on behalf of an insurer in claims against a managing agent for failure to turn over premium (Sup. Ct. N.Y.)
    • Represented a Middle Eastern government in post-award proceedings under the Canadian Arbitration Act.
    • Advised a Swiss reinsurer on recoveries under sponsored catastrophe bonds.
