Brett Gilbert’s practice focuses on cross-border mergers and acquisitions and asset and project finance transactions, with a particular emphasis on aviation-related matters.

    In the aviation sector, Brett has advised export credit agencies, lenders, leasing firms and airlines in a variety of transactions, including leveraged leases, portfolio sales, collateral foreclosures and general equipment financings. In the project finance sphere, Brett has advised lenders, sponsors and export credit agencies in connection with energy, oil and gas and mining projects in a variety of global regions. Brett has been involved in M&A transactions covering a variety of industries. Brett completed a legal secondment at a Japanese state-owned financial institution and at a top-tier Japanese trading company.

    Before joining us in Tokyo, Brett worked in the Tokyo and Los Angeles offices of two leading international law firms.

    Brett has lived in Japan for 20 years, is fluent in both written and spoken Japanese and previously taught Japanese at university level. He was a Stone Scholar at the University of Minnesota Law School.

    Brett is a member of the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association.

    • Representing senior management in a management buyout of a major international equipment leasing firm’s aircraft leasing division and the concurrent transfer of its US$8 billion aircraft portfolio.
    • Representing a major Japanese industrial manufacturing company in the acquisition of a worldwide metals processing company.
    • Representing a Japanese technology company in the acquisition of a minority stake in a US-based technology company
    • Representation of a Japanese technology company in a cooperative research and development arrangement with a U.S.-based university.
