Matthew Johnson is an associate within our Real Estate team based in Manchester. He specializes in real estate finance, development and a broad range of commercial property matters for the public sector, financial institutions and both private sector clients and funders.

    In real estate finance, Matthew has provided property advice to institutional lenders, public sector funders and debt funders on refinancing, asset re-structuring, acquisition funding and development funding against various asset classes.

    He has acted for local authorities, public sector investors and developers, and commercial and residential developers, and has recently acted for a national developer specializing in supported living schemes.

    Matthew has worked with hotel and leisure operators, commercial landlords and occupiers (both domestic and international), and equity investors in the infrastructure sector, and has acted for utility providers, statutory undertakers and telecommunications operators.

    • Advising local authorities and public sector clients in relation to their property portfolios, including development finance initiatives, regeneration projects, investment sales and commercial lettings.
    • Advising institutional lenders and mezzanine funders taking security against a wide range of property assets, including care homes, residential development schemes, warehousing units and commercial office schemes.
    • Acting for equity investors on the appointment of a new facilities management contractor for three public infrastructure development sites.
    • Advising on property due diligence for an investor report for a mixed-use regeneration project in Greater Manchester, with a development value of circa £400 million.
    • Acting for a specialist supported living developer on site acquisitions, lettings to supported living care providers and subsequent disposals to forward funders and property investment funds.
    • Acting for national residential developers on various sites across the Midlands, including site acquisitions, procuring HCA funding for infrastructure works, joint venture residential schemes (subject to collaboration agreements), phased disposals and RP sales, and advising on pre-tender board reports for land acquisitions from the HCA.
    • Providing property advice to publicly listed companies and large multinationals on equity purchases, de-mergers, portfolio management, lease renewals and related infrastructure works.
    • Acting for a national statutory undertaker on various transactions within its property and utilities portfolios, including land disposals (by auction and private contract), occupational leases, section 104/185 agreements, section 102 transfers and ancillary drainage easements.
