John Kirtley assists clients in the insurance, financial services and healthcare industries in a wide range of corporate governance and compliance matters. John offers clients significant expertise across a wide range of issues, including corporate and board governance; insurance ethics and regulatory compliance programs; data security and privacy; insurance company distribution systems and agent licensing; life insurance and annuity product matters, including product development, issues and claims matters; reinsurance; holding company act reporting and related regulatory matters; and interim general counsel support.
John brings almost two decades of experience working in-house at insurance companies to inform his approach to helping clients solve their most pressing issues. Most recently, John served as general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary at an Illinois life insurance company, where he served as an executive team member guiding short- and long-term corporate strategy. As the company’s chief legal and compliance officer, John was responsible for the day-to-day legal counsel and regulatory compliance across more than 45 states, including product management, consumer complaints and data privacy/security. In his role, he provided legal counsel to the board of directors, president and all business line leaders, including sales, finance, customer service, IT and HR. He also presided over board meetings, as well as annual policy owner meetings.
Before assuming these chief legal officer responsibilities, John spent 14 years at an insurance, financial services and employee benefits company, where he led litigation management and distribution transaction support, as well as counseled the company’s retirement plans, broker-dealer and group benefit business units.
