John is a specialist employment and industrial relations lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience. He has been recognised by his peers in Best Lawyers Australia for labour and employment and been acknowledged by Chambers Asia Pacific as a leader in his field.

    John started his career in senior human resources and industrial relations roles in the media and construction. This earlier experience brings a practical and commercial perspective to John’s advice and strategies and ensures the identification and early resolution of issues.

    John’s expertise is in collaborating with his clients and developing tailored employment and industrial relations strategies to achieve the best possible outcomes. He has worked with clients across a broad range of industries, helping them to better understand their employment decisions and achieve their goals.

    John has previously advised on employment law matters, including issues arising from mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructures; employee incentive schemes; executive employment arrangements; enforceability of post-termination restraint provisions; workplace investigations into bullying, harassment and discrimination; redundancy and general employment related litigation.

    • Working with the board and senior executives of a listed Australian headquartered global life sciences company in relation to issues arising from a take-over bid.
    • Providing ongoing support and strategy in relation to contractual arrangements involving the movement of benefits from one country to another and the integration of the company’s US incentive schemes to conform with the Australian legal requirements.
    • Acting for a large ASX listed corporation in relation to a significant underpayment investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
    • Advising on the Commonwealth Construction Code of Practice and Guidelines compliance.
    • Representing a number of major construction contractors and other interested parties in the Cole Royal Commission.
    • Developing and advising on appropriate industrial relation strategies for large employers in highly unionised environments.
    • Negotiating and settling industrial disputes.
    • Advising major companies in their dealings with the government authorities such as the Fair Work Ombudsman and the ABCC and various trade unions such as the CFMEU and the AWU and also peak labour bodies such as the ACTU and Unions NSW.
    • Representing major contractors in court and industrial tribunals in relation to industrial disputes.
    • Negotiating labour agreements, both geographical and project based.
    • Advising and representing major contractors in relation to serious health and safety claims.
