Beverley Smith is a senior associate in the Labor & Employment team based in our Birmingham office. Beverley is an experienced and commercially aware employment and business immigration lawyer who worked in industry prior to commencing a career in private practice. Beverley’s philosophy is very much to provide solutions driven and practical advice.

Beverley has approximately 10 years of experience in advising businesses (from SMEs to household names) on the full spectrum of contentious and non-contentious employment related issues. Beverley has a particular focus on the automotive, logistics, manufacturing and retail sectors.

Beverley is particularly interested in equality and gender pay, modern slavery and trade union related issues, however, she regularly advises clients on complex redundancy exercises and restructures, TUPE, senior level exits and carries out her own advocacy in the Employment Tribunal. Beverley can also assist clients with claims in the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

Beverley also provides strategic and practical business immigration advice. This includes right to work and illegal working issues, assistance with obtaining sponsor licences, Tier 2 & 5 advice and Home Office inspections.

Beverley regularly produces articles both internal and external and comments upon “live” topics in conjunction with external PR agencies.

Beverley also has judicial mediation experience and regularly conducts in-house training for clients and speaks at internal and external events on topical issues.


  • Defending a £300,000 multi-claimant holiday pay claim (an initial “test” claim from the trade union) for a global logistics provider.
  • Advising on the removal of a multimillion pound bonus scheme for a well-known high street retailer.
  • Advising a small hotel group on issues surrounding breach of the National Minimum Wage legislation.
  • Defending a global automotive business on a sex and race discrimination claim.
  • Advising a global logistics business presented with industrial action.
  • Defending a multi-claimant/multi-respondent equal pay claim for a logistics and well known high street retail business.
  • Advising a global manufacturing business in relation to the relocation of its manufacturing plant outside the UK.
  • Advising a Care Home Group following revocation of their Tier 2 sponsor licence, including liaising with the Home Office in relation to their Tier 2 sponsored migrants.
  • Advising a university who had been awarded a civil penalty.
