Beth Thompson is an associate in our Environmental, Safety & Health Practice based in our Manchester office. Beth focuses mainly on corporate defence, acting for companies and individuals facing criminal and regulatory proceedings following serious and fatal incidents. Beth has experience working for organisations in high-profile public inquiries and inquests, as well as assisting in independent internal investigations. Beth has a particular interest and skillset in working in matters of a sensitive nature, including those concerning mental health, suicides, terrorism and whistleblowing claims.

  • Representing a crowd management and security company in the public inquiry into the Manchester Arena Bombing.
  • Advising organisations and individuals in the public inquiry and criminal investigations into the Grenfell Tower Fire.
  • Representing organisations in preparation for inquests in which they are allocated the status of Properly Interested Persons, including acting for FC Nantes in the inquest into a player killed in a plane crash and Manchester City Football Club following the suicide of a former Academy player.
  • Representing a gas distribution company in relation to one of the largest HSE prosecutions in the UK arising out of alleged failures to maintain and inspect parts of a gas distribution network over many years.
  • Undertaking an independent investigation following a whistleblowing claim by a former employee, alleging historic and potentially ongoing breaches of health and safety laws relating to asbestos.
  • Assisting in the investigation and advising into HSE enforcement action following an explosion at an oil refinery.
  • Advising a hospitality company following a number of serious incidents and fatalities leading to various health and safety investigations.
  • Acting on a number of corporate transactions in relation to health and safety and licensing queries raised during the due diligence process.
