Mathew Thompson is a skilled associate with extensive experience advising major corporates, developers, local and central government and charities on diverse real estate matters. Mathew specialises in large-scale developments and infrastructure projects, commercial property acquisitions and disposals, leasing transactions across all asset classes (for both landlords and tenants) and the real estate components of corporate mergers and acquisitions.

  • Advising large corporates (including one of Australasia’s largest household hardware chains and one of New Zealand’s largest alcohol retailers) on their real estate transactions, particularly in relation to acquisitions, disposals, and leasebacks of significant landholdings.
  • Advising local and central government on a range of significant infrastructure projects, including:
    • A redevelopment of the transport (roading and public transport) network surrounding one of New Zealand’s largest airports
    • Development of a purpose-built super yacht and fishing vessel marina and haul-out yard
    • A range of water and wastewater pipeline infrastructure projects
  • Advising local government on the transformation of urban areas through the drafting and negotiation of complex development agreements, together with the negotiation of commercial leases that follow these large-scale projects.
  • Advising on all stages of commercial and residential developments from the initial acquisition of the land through to drafting and negotiation of construction contracts, managing subdivisions (including strata developments) and facilitating the final disposal of assets.
  • Advising on lease transactions across all asset classes for both landlords and tenants, including for major landlords of office buildings and retail shopping centres, and for property funds. 
  • Advising on the real estate components of numerous high-value corporate mergers and acquisitions, including conducting due diligence and preparing the real estate aspects of the transaction documents.
  • Advising on disputes arising from developments and leasing transactions, including against neighbours, contractors and local government.
  • Providing strategic advice on the structuring and negotiation of financing arrangements for residential and commercial development projects. 
  • Providing daily legal advice and strategic guidance to a large community housing provider that manages over 600 homes.
