About Barry

Barry Stimpson is an industry group leader and APAC lead of our Commodities & Shipping Group, and is the managing partner of our Singapore office. He has more than 25 years’ experience of handling matters in the international trade, shipping, offshore energy, construction and insurance sectors.

He has been based in the Far East since 1999 and previously worked in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney.

Barry’s practice covers both disputes and advisory work. He has been recognised by the major legal directories for his work in the shipping, commodities and offshore energy sectors, as well as for his work in international arbitration.

His shipping practice covers dry bulk and tanker charterparties, long-term contracts of affreightment, bills of lading, cargo claims, ship arrests, casualties, ship sale and purchase, and shipbuilding disputes. In the commodities sector, he advises on disputes arising out of trading contracts for most soft commodities (including palm oil, grains, cotton, cocoa and sugar) and has extensive experience of trading and storage contracts for oil, coal and ore. In offshore energy, he advises on ship sale/purchase contracts, newbuilding and conversion contracts, EPIC contracts, exploration/seismic-survey contracts and offshore support/supply vessel chartering contracts. He has handled several complex and high-value arbitrations relating to the design, construction and chartering of vessels.

Barry is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and a fellow and panel arbitrator of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA). He has appeared as lead counsel in numerous arbitrations in Singapore, London and Hong Kong, and he has handled references under most arbitral institutions, including the SIAC, ICC, LCIA, LMAA, SCMA, HKIAC, GAFTA, FOSFA and ICA. He has been appointed as a sole and panel arbitrator in SIAC, LMAA and ad hoc arbitration proceedings, and he has published a number of awards. He also has extensive experience of court proceedings in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.
