About Derk

Derk Oldenburg is an international and EU affairs advisor in our Public Policy International Practice. He provides strategic advice concerning EU legislation, politics and international relations from Brussels.

He also advises clients on regulatory developments and related risks in the EU internal market, inter alia on competitiveness and digital policy.

As a career diplomat, he served as the Netherlands’ deputy ambassador to Germany and deputy permanent representative to the EU. Most recently, he served as managing director for public policy at Liberty Global, focusing on telecommunications and digital policies.

Derk Oldenburg is an experienced international strategist and negotiator of complex EU legislation. He played an important role in the creation of the European Patent. His experience covers the policy field of several EU Council configurations, inter alia Competitiveness; Transport, Telecommunications and Energy; Agriculture and Fisheries; Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs; and the Environment Council.

During his time at Liberty Global, he focused on EU telecommunications and digital legislation, and taxation issues. He travelled extensively in Eastern Europe. Derk is a reserve officer in the Netherlands Marine Corps and known for his negotiation skills, creativity, cross-sectoral knowledge and can-do approach.
