Squire Patton Boggs today announced the addition of Darien Flowers, an experienced public policy professional bringing together executive and legislative branch experience in transportation, infrastructure, technology, and homeland security, to its Global Public Policy Practice.
Flowers’ addition brings further depth and experience in these areas to a bipartisan policy group that already includes former US Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater, former Chairman of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, Bill Shuster (R-PA), former Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Clark Ervin, former Majority Counsel for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Patricia Doersch and other federal policy veterans.
“From aviation, rail and maritime policy to counterterrorism, tech and homeland security matters, Darien has a broad range of expertise in both the executive and legislative branches of government that will make our policy group even stronger in these critical areas,” said former Congressman Bill Shuster. “We’re excited to have him join our team and looking forward to what we can accomplish for our clients with him onboard.”
Prior to the private sector, Darien spent nearly a decade in public service. He was Deputy Policy Director at the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Darien was the lead on the Tourism, Trade, and Export Promotion and Security Subcommittees, managing the legislative and oversight responsibilities of several agencies including the US Commercial Service and the International Trade Administration’s Office of Global Markets. During his time at the committee Darien also oversaw legislative and oversight efforts related to the US Coast Guard, Maritime Administration, and navigation and merchant marine issues. As an advisor to the chairman, he also provided counsel on counterterrorism and transportation security policy as well as domestic and international aviation matters.
Immediately before joining the committee, Darien was a Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy at the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). In this capacity, he provided direct support to the Under Secretary in the development of policies for USDOT, generating proposals and providing advice regarding legislative and regulatory initiatives across all modes of transportation. Specifically, Darien advised the Under Secretary on aviation, maritime, transit, and passenger rail policy including serving as a liaison to the Amtrak Board of Directors and management.
Most recently, Darien was Head of Government Relations at Flexport, a venture backed global supply chain and logistics technology company. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, he established the company’s government relations function and managed all efforts to identify, monitor, and forecast policy issues related to Flexport’s business interests.
Darien began his DC career in the US Senate, serving both on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs for then- subcommittee ranking member Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) and in the personal office of Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA).
