In this Q&A, Loren Cross (right), business development manager, and Nicole Sta. Clara (left), business development coordinator, share insights into their careers helping our legal teams drive client success and what makes working in Birmingham so rewarding.
Tell us about your career so far.
Loren: I’ve spent my career in business support roles within law firms, starting with a summer job that evolved into a permanent role in business development. I joined the firm 12 years ago on a temporary contract and progressed through several roles to become a business development manager. I now oversee business development strategies for our global Sports & Entertainment Industry Group, EMEA Real Estate Practice Group and the Birmingham office.
Nicole: I’m a business development coordinator and have worked in legal business development for four years, joining the firm 2 years ago. I support strategic planning, marketing campaigns and client events, working closely with lawyers to drive growth and engagement.
How does business development support client success, and how do you collaborate with our legal teams to achieve this?
Loren: We use market insight and strategic planning to help lawyers build stronger client relationships. By analysing trends and client needs, we develop tailored strategies that align our services with client goals, ultimately helping them succeed. Building trust is key. We work at both the practice and industry level, which gives us a broad perspective and allows us to offer tailored support.
Nicole: Collaboration requires adaptability and understanding different working styles. It’s about problem-solving and continuous learning.
Are there any stand-out projects you’ve worked on lately?
Loren: Our sports industry events have been a highlight, from tackling online abuse to launching our Women’s Sport Symposium and Sports Governance Forum. These events foster dialogue in the sector, and connect us with industry leaders and clients.
Nicole: I’ve helped deliver a series of general counsel dinners across Europe. These have strengthened relationships and created space for meaningful discussions across industries.

What’s it like working in Birmingham?
Loren: Birmingham is vibrant and full of energy, but it’s the supportive culture in our office that makes it special. We’re excited to move to a new office in mid-2026, after over 60 years at Rutland House. Still in the heart of the Colmore Business District, the new space will be net zero in operation; reflecting our commitment to sustainability and giving us a fresh platform to continue delivering world-class legal services.
Nicole: I relocated from Liverpool (and originally from the Philippines), and the move to Birmingham has been incredibly positive. The team is warm and collaborative; I’ve felt supported both professionally and personally. I’m lucky enough to have a partner mentor here in the Birmingham office too. Her leadership and confidence have inspired me to embrace challenges and grow beyond a linear career path.
What would you say to someone considering a role at Squire Patton Boggs?
Loren: Go for it – we did and haven’t looked back.
