About John

John Alderton is a partner in the Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group, based in our Leeds office. John’s expertise covers restructuring, reorganisation and business support, directors’ duties and board advisory, lender security reviews and enhancement, as well as contentious and noncontentious insolvency and cross-border issues.

John advises insolvency practitioners and other insolvency professionals, directors and management teams, private equity investors, banks and other financiers, as well as trade creditors, on all issues arising in stressed and distressed scenarios both within the UK and cross-border.

Chambers UK describes John as “an expert in his field” and “able to provide considered commercial advice in a range of complex scenarios”.

Legal 500 UK says John is “amongst the most commercial insolvency lawyers in Leeds”.

John is a fellow of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, and a non-appointment taking licensed insolvency practitioner.

Experience

Retail Energy Companies

  • Advising in relation to various distressed retail energy companies including directors’ duties and regulatory and responsibilities, dealing with the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) and managing supplier of last resort (SOLR) processes.

Distressed AIM-listed Businesses

  • Advising directors and management teams in relation to directors’ duties and regulatory responsibilities, in dealing with distressed and insolvent business scenarios.

Retail Business Distress

  • Advising directors, management teams and other stakeholders in relation to contingency planning and options to manage financial distress including restructuring plans, company voluntary arrangements and pre-pack insolvencies.

Construction

  • Advising directors, management teams, shareholders and other stakeholders in relation to financial distress arising from cashflow challenges and Business Safety Act claims including contingency planning and option reviews.

Asset-based Lending Distress

  • Advising various asset-based lenders in relation to contingency and recovery strategies, including working with management teams and fellow restructuring professionals to achieve distress refinancing, managed exits and going concern disposals of businesses.

Private Equity Investments

  • Advising sponsors, directors and management teams in relation to distressed private equity investments including carrying out and implementing contingency planning and option reviews.
