Based in our Los Angeles office, Semarnpreet (Semarn) Kaur is an associate in the firm’s Labor & Employment Practice, where she represents employers ranging from privately held companies to global corporations in all stages of employment litigation.
She defends clients in single-plaintiff matters involving claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and wrongful termination, as well as in complex wage-and-hour class actions and representative actions under the California Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA).
As lead associate on numerous single-plaintiff cases, Semarn manages all aspects of litigation strategy – from early case assessment through discovery, depositions, dispositive motion practice and mediation – often achieving early dismissals or favorable settlements. She also serves as lead defense counsel in putative wage-and-hour class and Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) actions, coordinating with clients to gather and validate class data, as well as collaborating with statistical experts to analyze data for litigation and settlement purposes.
Semarn has guided class actions from initiation through settlement administration and final approval, ensuring procedural compliance and effective advocacy for clients throughout the process. She regularly conducts and manages witness interviews, written discovery and Electronically Stored Information (ESI); prepares and defends depositions; and develops comprehensive factual records to support clients’ positions. Semarn also has experience drafting and arguing a broad range of procedural and dispositive motions, including motions to compel arbitration, motions to dismiss or demurrers, motions to strike and motions for summary judgment.
In addition to her litigation practice, Semarn reviews arbitration agreements, employee handbooks and workplace policies to strengthen defensibility and minimize legal exposure under California’s complex employment laws.
Semarn also has experience assisting in plaintiff-side-employment lawsuits specializing in labor and employment law, which allows her to bring a unique perspective to her approach in defending and counseling employers.
While in law school, Semarn clerked at various civil litigation firms. She also earned a CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Practice Foundations: Transactions and graduated with an emphasis in Business Law.
