Apprentice and Aspiring Solicitor – Zoya Alam’s Story So Far

Zoya Alam, solicitor apprentice in our Birmingham office, shares her journey from paralegal to aspiring solicitor, and what’s next for this rising star.

Paralegal apprenticeship graduation

In 2021, I took my first step into the legal world by joining the firm as a paralegal apprentice. Fast forward to today, I’m now partway through the firm’s Solicitor Apprenticeship program – a four-year journey that blends academic study with real-world legal experience. It’s been a rewarding path so far, and I’m excited to begin the training contract phase this September after successfully completing my studies thus far. If all goes to plan, I’ll graduate with my law degree in 2026 and qualify as a solicitor in 2027 after completing the SQE.

Life as a Solicitor Apprentice

My week is split between study and practical work. Mondays are typically dedicated to my law degree, while the rest of the week is spent in the Birmingham office, gaining hands-on experience. I’ve worked on everything from legal research and drafting to progressing live matters. No two days are the same, and I love the variety and responsibility that comes with the role.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing netball, baking and reading. I’m also learning Arabic – slowly but surely! These hobbies help me maintain a healthy balance and unwind after a busy week.

Looking Ahead

My goal is to pass the SQE on the first attempt and qualify as a solicitor with the firm. I haven’t yet decided which practice area I’ll qualify into – that’s something I’m looking forward to exploring during my training contract. What I do know is that I want to continue my career at a firm that has already given me such a supportive and enriching experience.

Longer term, I’d love to mentor future apprentices. This route into law has shaped my career in such a meaningful way, I’d be proud to help others start their journey too.

A Moment of Recognition

I’m incredibly proud to have been awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Greater Birmingham Young Professional of the Year Awards 2025. It’s an honor to be recognized alongside so many talented young professionals.

Why Birmingham?

Birmingham is a fantastic place to start a legal career. It’s vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity. The Birmingham office has a strong sense of community, and I’ve been lucky to work with colleagues who are not only experienced but also genuinely invested in my development.

Words To Live By

My biggest piece of advice for anyone considering the apprenticeship route? Be yourself. It’s tempting to try and present a “perfect” version of yourself, but authenticity really does go a long way. Show your genuine interest in the legal profession, let your personality shine, and don’t underestimate the power of a well-researched, tailored application. The firm is looking for potential, passion and people who will thrive in its culture – not just legal knowledge.

One phrase that’s stuck with me since starting out is, “If you don’t try, you’ll never know.” It’s helped me push past self-doubt and take opportunities that have shaped my career. Another favorite quote of mine, borrowed from Babe Ruth, is, “Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” It’s a great reminder that the hardest part is often just getting started.
