    In-house Lawyer Series 2014 – Spring Seminar

    The complimentary session will kick off bright and early with breakfast and registration starting at 8:30 a.m.

    The seminar will start with welcome and introductions to the speakers, agenda and topics for the day from Hannah Kendrick.

    There will then be several presentations held throughout the morning, focussing on the following subjects:

    • Perspectives of an In-house Lawyer – We are delighted to be joined by David Morgan of 2 Sisters Food Group who will share his insight and experiences as head of legal at one of Europe’s leading food supply companies.
    • UK Immigration Regulations – These apply to employers in the UK, whether you employ migrant workers or not. To remain compliant all employers must ensure they have rigid right to work check procedures in place. Employers who actively recruit migrant workers via a Tier 2 Sponsor License have an enhanced compliance obligation to the Home Office and face unannounced compliance visits. In this session Annabel Mace will cover:
      • Overview of the visa paths of entry to the UK for employment purposes
      • Right to work checks and penalties for employing illegal migrant workers
      • Tier 2 Sponsorship and compliance
    • HS2 is Happening – Matthew Collings considers the key planning and CPO issues arising out of HS2 including the procedural and Parliamentary processes involved; compensation and blight; petitioning and engagement in the process; and, the opportunities HS2 presents.
    • Using Outside Counsel: Managing Risk – Andrew Pike will look at some of the issues to be aware of when using outside counsel; what to do if the firm fails, if a conflict arises or if you wish to change advisers, etc.
    • Every Cloud – Utilising IT services delivered via a cloud model is fast becoming the norm for many businesses. Paul Jinks will consider some of the key legal risks and issues associated with utilising cloud services and some of the practical measures which can be adopted to mitigate risk.
    • Intellectual Property Update – Andrew Clay will provide a timely overview of some of the more important recent developments from the World of IP including:
      • The IP Bill
      • The Unitary Patents Court
      • Trademarks: Specsavers (trademark used different from trademark registered) & Martin Y Paz (co-existence)
      • Hyperlinking after Nils Svensson
      • Google AdWords (Cosmetic Warriors v Amazon and Marks & Spencer/Interflora)
      • Copyright infringement in relation to goods sold online (Pinckney)
      • New powers for customs

    The session will conclude at approximately 12:30 p.m.
